Following the Civil War, coastal schooners carried  much of the coal, lumber, granite, that fueled the growth of the Northeast.    Soon after the turn of the century, however, coastal schooners gave way to steam  tugs-and-barges, railroads, and eventually, trucks. By the late-1930s, few of the schooners that once traveled in great numbers continued to carry freight. The two-masted "Coral," a schooner that continued to carry cargo until being severely damaged in the Hurricane of 1938.
